St. Louis County Police to Conduct Sobriety Checkpoints

St. Louis County Police to Conduct Sobriety Checkpoints

It’s that time of the year again and the St. Louis County Police Department has once again announced that it will be stepping up its efforts to arrest individuals who are operating a vehicle in an intoxicated condition. In its official release on December 1, 2011, the St. Louis County Police Department indicated that will be participating in the Statewide Holiday DWI Enforcement Campaign to stop people from driving while impaired this Holiday season. “Enforcement efforts will be increased December 5th through 12th, 2011 and will focus on reducing deaths and serious injuries caused by impaired drivers,” the release stated.

Missouri police departments, including St. Louis County, commonly employ sobriety checkpoints at pre-determined locations, where all drivers passing through are stopped and questioned regarding their alleged intoxication without any observed traffic violations being committed or prior probably cause to arrest for DWI. There are certain procedures that must be followed by any police department for the sobriety checkpoint to be deemed constitutional.
